Synopsis
“Seen & Heard” is a touching and revealing documentary series set at the intersection of the Deaf and hearing worlds. It follows the unusual process of casting and staging a mixed English and American Sign Language (ASL) theatre production. And nothing is easy. Many of the cast and crew have little or no theatre experience, and most of the Montreal actors use Langue de signes québécoise (LSQ) and don’t know ASL or English. There are the day-to-day challenges the Deaf cast and crew face navigating the hearing world. But the biggest struggle happens in the wings of the theatre, where the norms and values of Deaf culture at times clash with those of the hearing world.
